A dedicated server gives you control of a physical machine, but suitability depends on the CPU generation, memory, storage, connectivity and your software—not just a plan name.
Both can host websites and applications. The key difference is whether the underlying machine is shared or dedicated to your workload.

16 ANSWERSDedicated server hosting means an entire physical server is allocated to one customer rather than several customers running separate virtual servers on the same physical machine. It can be useful for demanding websites, business applications, databases, and organizations that need control over operating-system settings or hardware resources. But a dedicated server is not the automatic next step for every website. If a well-sized VPS comfortably handles your traffic and application, staying with VPS hosting may be simpler and less expensive. Start by checking your actual resource usage.
Dedicated server pricing in India depends on the processor model and generation, RAM, drive configuration, bandwidth terms, data-centre location, IP allocation, and whether server administration is included. LumoHosting plans currently shown range from ₹4,499 to ₹27,499 per month equivalent for the one-year term, depending on the selected configuration. Always compare the full contract cost, setup fees, GST, licence charges and renewal terms before selecting a provider. A low monthly-equivalent figure does not necessarily mean monthly payment is available.
A monthly-equivalent price makes different server configurations easier to compare, but it describes the annual bill divided by twelve. For example, ₹4,499 per month equivalent corresponds to ₹53,988 for 12 months before any applicable taxes or additional services. It is not a promise of month-to-month billing. The total commitment should appear next to the monthly equivalent, as it does in the pricing preview. The two-year and three-year tabs show the applicable term prices, upfront totals and approximate savings compared with one-year rates. Confirm any taxes, optional services and renewal charges in your written quote.
It depends on the workload. A VPS gives you an isolated virtual environment with allocated CPU, RAM and storage. A dedicated server gives you an entire physical machine, which can be useful when you need more capacity, hardware-level isolation or specific system configurations. But a modern VPS with faster CPUs or NVMe storage may outperform an older physical server on some tasks. Compare measured processor performance, memory use, disk latency and network needs rather than choosing by category alone. For a smaller business website, VPS may be the better value.
Start with the bottleneck in your current hosting environment. If PHP workers or application processes are saturating CPU, processor performance and available cores matter. If the database or caching service repeatedly fills memory, prioritize RAM. If queries and file operations spend time waiting on disks, the storage type and configuration become important. Use real peak-traffic measurements, not just monthly visitor numbers. Leave sensible headroom, but avoid buying an oversized machine solely because a plan is labelled Pro or Enterprise.
With a true bare-metal dedicated server, the physical CPU and installed RAM belong to the machine allocated to your environment. They are not subdivided between unrelated customer VPS instances on the same host. That does not guarantee a particular application speed, because the CPU generation, clock speed, storage and system setup still matter. Ask for the actual processor make and model, core and thread counts, RAM type and configuration. Labels such as 16 cores are only part of the specification.
A dedicated server can often run a supported Linux distribution or Windows Server, but available operating systems depend on the provider and hardware. Control panels such as cPanel, Plesk or other management tools may require paid licences, and some products have specific operating-system and resource requirements. Before ordering, share your required OS version, software stack, databases and panel choice. Ask which installation work is included, who maintains the software, and what recurring licence charges apply. Do not assume Windows or cPanel is free.
An unmanaged server generally leaves operating-system updates, application configuration, security rules, backups and routine maintenance to the customer, while the provider maintains the underlying hardware and agreed network services. A managed service may cover some or all of those tasks, but the word managed is not a universal checklist. Ask exactly who handles patches, monitoring, malware incidents, control-panel issues, data restoration and application troubleshooting. Also check response windows and whether management is priced separately.
Bandwidth claims need context. Some offers use unlimited or unmetered to describe how traffic is billed, while a physical network port still has a speed limit. A fair-use policy, acceptable-use policy, traffic-shaping condition or additional charge may also apply. Ask for the network port speed, expected sustained throughput, included monthly transfer if any, and how unusually high usage is handled. If you run video delivery, backups, game services or large file downloads, these details are especially important.
No. RAID can improve drive redundancy or performance depending on its configuration, but it does not replace an independent backup. Mirrored drives can still reflect accidental deletions, corrupted files, ransomware damage or application mistakes. For important data, plan regular backups to a separate destination, test restoration, and document your recovery point and recovery time goals. Before ordering, confirm the number of drives, available RAID options, whether hardware replacement is covered and whether backups are an optional paid service.
Migration can often be planned to minimize disruption, but promising zero downtime for every application would be misleading. A careful move starts with an inventory of websites, databases, storage, email, certificates and running services. Next, back up the source, configure the new server, test the application and plan database synchronization or a maintenance window if required. Lowering DNS TTL beforehand can help with cutover, but DNS caching and application dependencies still need consideration. Ask what migration support is included in the final quote.
Choose a location that serves the people and systems that use your application most. For an India-focused service, hosting in an Indian data centre can sometimes reduce network latency compared with a distant overseas facility, but real routing and application architecture still matter. Ask for the exact available city or region, a test IP if offered, connectivity information and applicable data-handling requirements. Do not assume every plan is physically hosted in India simply because prices are displayed in rupees.
Root or administrator access is common for unmanaged dedicated servers, but permissions, number of IPv4 addresses and access method should be stated in your order. Linux commonly uses SSH, while Windows administration often uses Remote Desktop. Extra IP addresses can involve justification, technical restrictions and recurring charges. Confirm what is included before buying, especially if your applications need multiple public endpoints or specific firewall and networking arrangements.
Dedicated hardware upgrades are different from increasing the virtual allocation of a VPS. Some physical machines have spare RAM slots or drive bays, while others may require replacing components or migrating to another server. CPU changes can depend on motherboard compatibility and the available inventory. Ask how upgrades are scheduled, whether downtime is required, how data is protected, and whether price or billing terms change. If growth is expected, it is worth planning for it before the initial deployment.
They can be, especially when a business needs substantial processing capacity, larger memory pools or a controlled physical environment. An ecommerce store might be limited by database queries or application workers; a SaaS platform may need sustained CPU resources and predictable background-job performance; an analytics database might need more RAM and faster storage. The best machine depends on measurements and architecture. Hosting alone does not guarantee application uptime, PCI compliance, security or fast page loads, so plan those separately.
Ask for the precise CPU model, core/thread count, RAM and storage configuration, RAID options, data-centre city, port speed, traffic policy, number of IPv4 addresses, operating-system and control-panel licences, management and monitoring scope, backup options, hardware replacement arrangements, deployment window, renewal price, setup charges and tax treatment. The quote should show the billing period and full payable amount, not only a monthly equivalent. If something important is absent, get it clarified in writing before ordering.
